BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava has revealed the secret of BSNL’s growth

BSNL CMD Mr. Anupam Shrivastava has revealed in an interview held with AajTak about BSNL’s secret of coming to operating profit. When he was asked about the concept of BSNL’s SWAS(Service with a smile) program he told “BSNL was earlier known as DOT(Department of Telecommunication) which was a Govt. Department and it was a monopolistic organization and then in 2000 we became a corporate organization and faced stiff competition from our competitors. But our mentality as a Govt. organization had not changed much and we still were a technical organization where we used to install Exchanges, Optical Fibre Cable and wait for subscribers to join our network. So we were basically a technical department. BSNL has also faced a sharp increase in net loss due to competitive market but from last two year the amount of net loss has decreased and we even managed to jump nearly six-fold in operational profit in FY 2015-16 compared to FY 2014-15. Now we feel a change in our system and the most important change has neither come from our side nor from the management side, this change has come from our Employees association and union.”

Well, that was quite a speech from CMD BSNL acknowledging the employee’s role in the growth of BSNL. BSNL earlier was number one mobile operator in the country but due to various reason, it could not maintain its profitability. Till 2006 BSNL was able to make the profit but during 2006-2012 it could not expand its network, as a result, BSNL became a loss-making PSU. But reversing the trend BSNL reported an operating profit of Rs 672.00 crore for FY 2015 and during FY 2016 it has reported a nearly six-fold jump in operating profit at Rs 3,885 crore.

The PSU saw an accelerated growth in its mobile business during 2015-16 when 25000 BTS were installed and when it launched various lucrative offers like Unlimited 3G data for Rs 1099, national roaming free. Now BSNL is planning to launch unlimited voice plan at Rs 149 along with 300 MB data from 1st January 2017.

The landline segment including fixed line and broadband grew by about 2 percent. BSNL is currently offering unlimited broadband at Rs 249.00 with 1Mbps speed which has also helped it immensely to increase its fixed-line customer base.
